sixth grade
Scofield Christian School exists to "provide children
with an academically excellent education that is well-balanced,
comprehensive, and integrated with Biblical truths and principles
within a nurturing, Christ-centered environment."
In keeping with the school's mission, the sixth grade curriculum
includes a well-balanced and comprehensive program of both textbooks
and hands-on learning activities integrated with Biblical truths
and principles. Literature, writing, and special projects are
incorporated into every subject area. Content in various subject
areas is integrated and coordinated for optimal learning experiences.
Highlights of the sixth grade program and curriculum follow:
BIBLE - The sixth grade curriculum presents
three strands of instruction: a survey of the New Testament, a
personalized study of selected passages; and Biblical application
of these Scriptures to important issues faced by sixth-graders.
The materials are designed to capture student's interest and encourage
them to think and become more Christ-like as they enter their
pre-teen years. The focus is on personal Bible study and the understanding
of principles that can guide all of life's decisions. The curriculum
is challenging; convicting, but refreshing, as students receive
a solid foundation of Biblical content with strong application
in their personal lives. The ACSI Bible Curriculum is
used.
LANGUAGE ARTS - In language arts, sixth graders
draw from their foundational skills in reading, writing, listening,
critical thinking, grammar, and spelling to broaden their awareness
of God's wonderful gift of communication through words. Students
continue using phonics rules to spell correctly in weekly spelling
assignments and tests. Diagramming subjects, verbs, adjectives,
adverbs, direct and indirect objects, predicate nominatives, predicate
adjectives, and prepositional phrases are all covered thoroughly.
The use of the SRA reading program helps sharpen reading comprehension.
Paragraph writing takes on a new dimension in sixth grade as students
are encouraged to write eye-catching, topic sentences, followed
by four supporting sentences, and ending with an equally creative
summary sentence that restates the main idea. Discussion questions,
written in paragraph form, are used in reading, social studies,
and science. The most challenging aspects of the sixth grade language
arts curriculum are the novel studies. From an in-depth analysis
of the Civil War in Across Five Aprils to the devastating
realities of the Holocaust as experienced in The Hiding Place,
students are stretched to incorporate several language arts disciplines
and to reach new levels of reading comprehension and literature
appreciation. The sixth grade language arts curriculum provides
a wonderful springboard for entering junior high school with an
excellent foundation for the challenging work ahead. Open
Court Reading Curriculum, SRA Reading, Wordly Wise 3000, A Beka
Language Curriculum, D'Nealian Hand Writing Curriculum, and other
quality literature are used.
MATH - The focus of sixth grade mathematics
is using ratios to describe proportional relationships involving
number, geometry, measurement, and probability and adding and
subtracting decimals and fractions. A strong emphasis on reading
and writing whole numbers/decimals/place value and exercises in
mental math, rounding, and estimation are also a part of the math
program. Other topics include properties of numbers; prime factorization;
algebraic expressions and equations; ratio, proportion, and percent;
geometry; integers; and perimeter, area, and volume. Through out
the year, students build a foundation of basic understandings
in algebraic thinking. Problem solving strategies, organizational
skills, and cooperation within groups are utilized during projects
and activities which include: balancing a check book, planning
a Christmas budget for a family of four, using charts and graphs
to interpret statistical information, and drawing creative designs
using pattern blocks. The Harcourt Math Curriculum and
Mountain Math are used for curriculum.
SCIENCE - In sixth grade science four major
areas are explored: life science, physical science, earth science,
and the human body. In life science students study plant growth
and responses, cells, animal adaptations and the climate/biomes/life
in each one. Sixth graders observe matter/atoms, acids/bases,
elements/compounds, and chemical changes in matter. They study
light, energy, and electricity to have a better understanding
of physical science and God's marvelous power. In earth science,
students investigate the earth's resources, changes in the earth's
crust, space, as well as try to forecast the weather. Some of
the highlights of sixth grade science are the astronomy unit which
allows students to explore the creation story as seen in the constellations
and the hands-on field trip to Forest Glen Christian Camp
near Huntsville, TX, where students enjoy a bit of outdoor
education and learn to appreciate God's handiwork. Science culminates
with a study of how God created the human body, planned for human
development, and gave man the responsibility of being a good steward
of his body. This unit ends with a Biblically integrated presentation
on abstinence from Marilyn Morris of "Aim for Success".
The resources include both the Scott Foresman Burdett
Science and Windows on Science Curriculum.
HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY - In social studies of the
New World, sixth graders can see God's provision in establishing
the countries of the Western Hemisphere. Teaching history from
God's perspective and with a Biblical base gives students a new
reverence for God's sovereignty over all things. The creative
mind of God is seen through the study of many fascinating landforms,
plants, animals, peoples, and cultures of the Western Hemisphere.
Students gain a more in-depth look at the United States and its
great heritage. Godly men and ideas are studied throughout the
curriculum to heighten the students' awareness of a Christian
world-view. In conjunction with a novel the Civil War is studied
at great length. Also, the true story of God's miraculous deliverance
of Corrie Ten Boom in The Hiding Place lends itself to
a thorough look at World War II. The expansion of the West and
the Industrial Revolution are also covered. A true sense of patriotism
is fostered in the sixth grade history curriculum as students
learn what price was paid for their freedom. The A Beka
Curriculum (The New World) and other resources are used as curriculum.
COMPUTER – Computer is twice a week for
a full semester. Students develop keyboarding proficiency, learn
to effectively use Microsoft Word and Publisher, Power Point,
and Excel.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical education is available to students three days a week. In P.E., sixth graders take a field trip to learn a new sport, water polo.
