Kindergarten Curriculum
The Kindergarten curriculum includes a well-balanced and comprehensive program of both workbook and hands-on learning activities integrated with Biblical truths and principles. Content in various subject areas is coordinated as much as possible for optimal learning experiences. Highlights of the kindergarten program and curriculum follow:
Bible: Kindergarten Bible includes several
areas: listening to familiar Bible stories, especially those focused
on the children of the Bible with an emphasis on God's care; applying
Biblical principles such as obedience, honesty and sharing to
life's problems; Scripture memorization; and Christian character
qualities. The program uses the Bob Jones Press curriculum
which integrates all core subject areas.
Language Arts: The kindergarten language
arts program includes several areas of emphasis: phonics (by introducing
a letter and sound each week), word building, spelling, writing,
speaking and listening. Beginning reading is introduced on an
individual level as students demonstrate readiness. This is done
with phonetic readers and the learning of basic sight words. Speaking
is encouraged through classroom discussion and "show and
tell." The textbooks used to help meet these goals are as
follows: Scott Foresman, D'Nealian Handwriting, and Early
Approach to Reading Skills.
Math: The Harcourt math workbook along
with numerous manipulatives such as Uniflex cubes, peg boards,
pattern cards, etc., form the basis for learning the following
concepts: patterning, classifying, geometry, comparing, graphing,
counting, number recognition, ordering and naming groups, writing
numbers, measuring, time and money, addition and subtraction.
In math the Harcourt Curriculum is used.
Science/Social Studies: The use of weekly
unit studies form the framework for learning about the five senses,
the state of Texas, important leaders, holidays, animals, plants,
water and air. The kindergarten field trips include visits to
the Farmer's Market, The Science Place and The Dallas Arboretum.
In science, the Christian Schools International Curriculum
is used.
Center Time: The Kindergarten program includes center time during the week when teachers have the opportunity to work with individuals or small groups. Children choose from a variety of centers which teach and provide reinforcement of skills - - blocks, puzzles, Play-doh, listening, books, art and computer skills.
Specials: Every day the students have the privilege of learning with specialized teachers in the areas of music, art, library, Spanish and physical education.
Recess: Realizing that fresh air and exercise are important, the students have supervised time on the playground every day.
