CHURCH AFFILIATION
Scofield Memorial Church was founded in 1877 as the First Congregational
Church of Dallas. One of its first pastors was C.I. Scofield, who is best
known for the Scofield Reference Bible which has blessed millions of believers. In 1923, the church was renamed in recognition of the greatness of Scofield’s contribution.
Among those who followed him were Dr. Lewis Sperry Chafer, who later was
instrumental in founding Dallas Theological Seminary, Dr. Harlin Roper,
who pastored faithfully for forty-four years and Pastor R. Neil Aschcraft who served
as pastor for twenty-seven years.
In 2002, Matthew St. John became senior pastor of Scofield. During his tenure, Pastor St. John was committed to building on Scofield's rich heritage by empowering current and future generations of believers to honor and promote the reputation of the Lord Jesus Christ.
In 2009, Scofield Memorial Church called Dr. Jeffery J. VanGoethem as Pastor. Dr. VanGoethem is a native of Norway, Michigan (a small town in Michigan's Upper Peninsula). He is a 1974 graduate of Norway High School. Following graduation from college, Jeff attended Marquette University Law School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Noticing his deepening desire to learn and study God's Word, he decided to forsake a legal career and open his life to the work of the gospel.
He enrolled at Dallas Seminary in August of 1978 and completed his studies in 1982, graduating with the Th.M. degree. His major concentration of study was New Testament Literature and Exegesis.
